Here at San Diego sailing tours in partner with Seas Lyfe we take ocean conservation very seriously. With this in mind, the passing of Assembly Bill 1884 in California earlier this year was a big win for ocean conservation. Assembly 1884 being the groundbreaking bill that prohibits all full-service restaurants in California from the giving out of plastic straws unless they are requested by the guest. Since the implementation, there have mixed reactions from the public. To combat this we at San Diego Sailing Tours have compiled a list of plastic straw alternatives. From the classic stainless steel straw to silicone and glass straws.
The Silicone Straw
When it comes to traditional plastic straw alternatives our first choice would have to be silicone straws. Many may be under the impression that Silicone and plastic straws are made of the same material. However silicone straws are made of silicon while plastic straws are made up of petroleum, food-grade silicone straws contain no plastic or petroleum. Safe to use and easy to clean silicone straws are a great plastic straw alternative for the whole family.
The Stainless Steel Straw
Along with silicone straws, stainless steel straws are a great alternative to traditional plastic. Stainless steel straws have gained popularity recently for their sleek design and durability. When it comes to cleaning many stainless steel straws come with a pipe cleaner for ease of use. Just make sure to do your research to ensure you purchase the best quality straws that are resistant to rusting and staining.
The Bamboo Straw
If you would like to go for a completely natural plastic staw alternative the bamboo straw is for you! Unlike other alternatives, bamboo straws are typically free of inks, dyes, and bleaches. By using these reusable, biodegradable, plant-based drinking straws you are helping to reduce your environmental footprint one uses at a time.
With so many straw alternatives in the market its easier than ever for everyone to stand up and make a change for a better tomorrow.
