Here is our choice of the top 3 beginner hiking trails in San Diego

#1 Los Penasquitos Canyon Trail

Length: 4.7 miles

We are starting off with a relatively easy yet rewarding trail. This hike is great for all ages and skill levels; it is even perfect for pets to come and tag along. Some of the things that you will see along these trails are waterfalls, large patches of trees, and year-round streams. This would make for a perfect family outing any time of the year.

Getting there: Exit the 15 Freeway on Mira Mesa Blvd. Head west and make a right on Black Mountain Rd. Follow it north and take a left on Canyonside Rd. Parking is available here.

This amazing hiking spot has 3 trails packed into one so you are in for one big adventure! This hike has some of the best views in San Diego without a doubt! You can start off with the Razor Point trail that runs for about 1.3 miles, then head over to the Guy Fleming trail that goes for about .7 miles. There is also a steeper more challenging Beach Trail that runs for 1.7 miles but allows access to the beach.
Getting there: Take Hwy 5 to Carmel Valley Road, go west to Camino Del Mar and go south about one mile to the reserve entrance at the foot of the hill.

#3 Cowles Mountain
Length: 3 miles
Cowles  Mountain is definitely one of the more popular hikes in San Diego. It contains a couple very steep switchbacks, but guaranteed anyone can get it with enough persistence. There isn’t too much greenery but the trail does lead to the highest point in San Diego which doubles as an absolutely amazing view. Make sure to keep an eye out for snakes along the trail though!
Getting there: Take Interstate 8 to the College Avenue exit. Proceed north on College Avenue to Navajo Road. Turn right and proceed on Navajo Road to Golfcrest Drive. Turn left on Golfcrest Drive to enter the parking lot.
