Are you a big military buff? If so, you’d be hard-pressed to find a city in America with more military sights, tours, museums, etc. than San Diego.
Although most can only be seen from the outside, there are plenty of “hands on” military sites to visit, as well. One of them is the U.S.S. Midway Museum, a retired U.S. Navy aircraft carrier that features a self-guided audio tour of over 60 exhibits, 2 flight simulators, and 29 restored aircraft. There is also the Veteran’s Museum at Balboa Park.
Are you a fan of the Navy SEAL movie Act of Valor? Hint: check out the base of the Imperial Beach Pier. Fan of the TOP GUN movie with Tom Cruise? Check out Liberty Station!
From the outside, you can also catch a glimpse of the following military installations in San Diego (all installations with an asterisk ‘*’ can be seen from San Diego Sailing Tours cruises):
- Camp Pendleton North (U.S. Marines)
- Naval Base San Diego (U.S. Navy)
- Naval Amphibious Base Coronado (U.S. Navy)*
- Navy Lodge North Island Naval Air Station (U.S. Navy)*
- Marine Corps Air Station – Miramar (U.S. Marines)
- Marine Corps Recruit Depot (U.S. Marines)
- Naval Medical Center (U.S. Navy)
- Fleet Anti-Submarine Warfare (U.S. Navy)*
- Naval Base Point Loma (U.S. Navy)
- Imperial Beach Outlying Landing Field (U.S. Navy)
- NSC San Diego, Point Loma Annex (U.S. Navy)*
- and more!
Still want more “hands on” military sights, as a civilian visiting San Diego? In that case, you might want to consider visiting San Diego again during Fleet Week, which (according to their representative that we spoke with) will be held in 2017 on October 11 – 18, with tours of Navy ships at Broadway pier on Oct. 13 – 14, and a sea & air parade on Oct. 14th.
