The Newport Bermuda Race is a daring, 635-mile race from Newport Beach all the way to the Onion Patch. As boat crews one another all the way to Bermuda, they must test their endurance and willpower as they sail over from the United States to Bermuda. This is one of the largest amateur sailing races. Every year, there are over5,000 boats and 50,000 sailors that come out to put their seamanship skills to the test.
“Normal boats”have always been the center of focus, but recently, high-performance boats have become a force to be reckoned. In 2012, a Rambler had broken the elapsed time record by a whopping 16 hours! This event was founded in 1906 by Thomas Fleming Day stating “A noble art makes noblemen, and there is no art nobler than seamanship.” This may seem like a very daring adventure, but since the event was founded there has only ever been one death.
This race was hosted on June 15, 2018, and is expected to run a couple days. Once the sailors coast in over the reef covered shore, they’ll enjoy themselves at the after-party and the awards ceremony, but they’ll have to begin to prepare for the trip back to the United States.
