The miles of coastline that make up the beaches of San Diego County are some of the best in the world, with numerous unique beach communities adjoining them. Exploring the coast is one of the things that makes San Diego such a great place to live a lifestyle close to the beach.

Starting down towards the border, Imperial Beach is below the San Diego Bay, and is full of families enjoying a day at the beach. Both Silver Strand State Beach and Coronado Beach, on Coronado Island, are fantastic places to bask in the sun on a warm day. Past Point Loma and Sunset Cliffs, Ocean Beach is a classically-San Diego beach neighborhood with a laid-back vibe. Mission Beach and Pacific Beach, just across the channel to Mission Bay, are the centers of tourism and activity for much of the beach-going crowd. La Jolla is world-famous as a wealthy beach-front community, and the site of the University of California, San Diego.

Torrey Pines State Beach, just beyond the famous PGA Tour golf course, is a great place for hikes and mellow waves for learning to surf. Del Mar Beach and Solana Beach are both primarily locals spots, popular with local teenagers and families. Encinitas, encompassing both Cardiff-by-the-Sea and San Elijo State Beach, is another popular local neighborhood, with great restaurant and bar offerings. And both Carlsbad and Oceanside, at the northernmost edge of San Diego County, offer local beach town living while still being uniquely San Diego.
