Every Wednesday night in the Summer, the San Diego Bay will be full of boats and very excited sailors. This is a weekly event called the Beer Can Races! The name comes from the floating beer cans which used to mark the race course years ago.

Not only was this a tradition for San Diego Yacht clubs, but also yacht clubs all over the Country. Even though official judging has become more serious, this fun event carries on throughout the years!

Doug Deeds, a member of the San Diego Yacht Club, started creating furniture some fifty years ago. This furniture was created out of beer cans that he and his friends had used. So, not only does the history of these races come from the floating beer cans, but also from Doug Deeds’ beer can furniture. Beer cans during the 1950’s were made out of steel, which made it easier for Deeds to create his furniture.

The Beer Can races continue today, right across our Marina, here at San Diego Sailing Tours!!!
