This is a spectacular photo of our own yachts cast in the warm glow of a San Diego sunset. This is the type of experience we hope to capture in our Sunset Tours; something warm and memorable. Sometimes a moment like this is captured in the written word as well. So below, I’ve compiled two poems that I feel resonate with the glowing embrace of the sun and the sea.

NATURE, POEM 13: THE SEA OF SUNSET by Emily Dickinson

This is the land the sunset washes,

These are the banks of the Yellow Sea;

Where it rose, or whither it rushes,

These are the western mystery!

Night after night her purple traffic

Strews the landing with opal bales;

Merchantmen poise upon horizons,

Dip, and vanish with fairy sails.

About Emily:

She was an American Poet in the Mid-1800’s, never married, and was considered a recluse. She had a fondness for all white clothing. She wrote thousands of poem, but less than a dozen were published in her time. Publishers in her time often edited her poems far from the original to fit the format of the time, and she discovered for her brilliance until after her death.

Young Sea by Carl Sandburg

THE sea is never still.
It pounds on the shore
Restless as a young heart,
Hunting.

The sea speaks
And only the stormy hearts
Know what it says:
It is the face
of a rough mother speaking.

The sea is young.
One storm cleans all the hoar
And loosens the age of it.
I hear it laughing, reckless.

They love the sea,
Men who ride on it
And know they will die
Under the salt of it

Let only the young come,
Says the sea.

Let them kiss my face
And hear me.
I am the last word
And I tell
Where storms and stars come from.

About Carl:

He was a famous American Poet from the late 1800’s to the 1960’s and a three-time Pulitzer Prize winner. Unlike most artist, he actually gained a following during his lifetime and was considered a major influencer in literature.
