If you’ve been aboard one of our signature sailing tours, you’ve probably seen one of our experienced sea captains at the helm, expertly navigating the waters of the San Diego Bay. In order to become an expert sailing captain like ours, sailors need plenty of experience out on the water.
The keys to becoming an experienced sailing captain are time and knowledge. Both are important components to building skill and comfortability out on the water. As the captain of a vessel, you’d be responsible for both the vessel and everyone aboard.
Time out on the water is crucial as it gives you the experience necessary to captain your own vessel. Typically, captains must spend over a year continuously logging days spent on the water in order to qualify for most U.S. Coast Guard-approved sailing licenses. The more time you spend out on the type of vessel you’re interested in sailing, the more familiar you’ll become with the vessel and the waters you’re navigating.
Knowledge is just as important when building your sailing skill set. There are many courses that you can take in order to gain knowledge on topics from sailing theory, navigation, rules of the sea, and seamanship.
To get a head start on your building up your sailing acumen, your captain aboard your San Diego Sailing Tours charter would be very happy to give you a few lessons, share some knowledge, and lend advice on how to become the best sea captain possible!
