For many of you, your sail with San Diego Sailing Tours will be your very first time on a sailboat. Here are a few tips on how to prepare for your day at sea!
Dress appropriately: bring many different layers to wear, the temperature can change quickly out on the water!
Protect yourself: the sun can become very strong out on the water. Make sure to bring a hat and sunglasses to protect you from all the elements.
Sunscreen: if it is summer time, the chances of getting sun or wind burns are very high. Bring a high SPF sunscreen aboard with you to avoid a painful burn!
Seasickness:
- Don’t go below: when people start to feel sick they often want to go down into the cabin. That will only make matters worse, stay outside where you can see landscape and get fresh air.
- When in doubt, look out: take a look at the view around you, pick something to look at it and use that as your vantage point.
- Medicate yourself: if you tend to get motion sick easily think about getting some over the counter medication and take it before you go out on the water!
- Eat: Make sure you have something in your stomach before you go. You don’t want to be full but a little food can help combat feeling sick. Bubbly drinks can also help settle your stomach.
Be aware of the BOOM: the boom swings back and forth and can often hit you in places that will hurt. When your captain is coming about make sure you are not in the way!
Terms: learn some basic sailing term such as port, starboard, aft and bow before you go out on your sail.
Safety:
- be careful not to stand on ropes and don’t wrap them around your hands, you don’t want to get hurt.
- Always hold onto something on the boat. One hand for you and one hand for the boat!
- Follow your captain’s instructions and always ask questions if you have them
Last but not least, have FUN and ENJOY your sail to its fullest potential!
