After the past months of public outcry, Mayor Faulconer has finally announced a new proposal that aims to regulate the dockless scooters. These new regulations will include restricting speeds in select areas and requiring that the rideshare companies’ information is shared and public. Not only Mayor Faulconer has been pressed on this issue, but also Barbara Bry and Lorie Zapf have been calling for the establishment of rules meant to govern these dockless scooters.

In September, public health officials at Scripps Mercy Hospital had deemed that the scooter trend is a “public health disaster in the making,” they continued by saying that this was spearheading track injuries related to electric vehicles. Faulconer has said that these dockless scooters provide a great option and alternative to those that would rather leave their car at home, but there are still a lot of problems that need to be figured out. The top of these problems would be safety.

If City Council adopts these new rules, it would immediately establish speed regulations limiting the users to go no faster than 8 miles per hour in select areas such as the boardwalks in Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, and La Jolla. In addition to that, these scooters would only be allowed to operate in the street and will be completely prohibited from use on sidewalks. Let us know what you guys think about these new dockless scooter regulations and if they are actually necessary.
