Ever since World War 1, researchers and scientists have been collecting data and studying the temperature off the end of Scripps Pier in La Jolla, California. This happens at least once every day, someone will walk to the end of the pier, take a seawater sample, and measure its temperature and salt concentration.

On August 1, 2018 we measured a record-high ocean temperature of 78.6 °F then again that next Friday it jumped to 78.8°F breaking yet another record. The previous records had dated back to 1916 where the record temperature was recorded to be 78.4 °F. Although this may be crazy for San Diego, it is nothing compared to the Atlantic Water surrounding Miami whose typical temperature is 85 °F in the first half of August.

It is not just the water that has been much warmer than normal, but all of Southern California has been experiencing unnaturally warm temperatures. Things are definitely changing when the colder waters of the West Coast begin to feel more like the bathwater of the East Coast.
