For more than fifty years San Diego has been home to a small (but growing) population of parrots. They can be seen in many areas of San Diego from coastal beach areas to the east county suburbs of Lakeside and La Mesa. Eating mostly fruits and berries from local trees and bushes the birds travel around San Diego depending on what food is in season and what’s available, However they do not migrate and live in San Diego year round.

No one is exactly sure how the birds came to populate San Diego as they are native to Mexico and South America. A popular theory is that they were once pets that escaped or were set free and found San Diego’s temperate climate a perfect home, Another being they simply migrated north looking for a more suitable habitat. Whatever the reason for there appearance they are here to stay, because like most of us they found San Diego a lovely place to live.

We’ll sail you soon.
