Our next Sandy Spotlight is on Moonlight Beach, one of the top San Diego County beaches, located in Encinitas. Moonlight State Beach is a long-time favorite of local San Diegans who go to North County to escape the summertime crowds at the more popular tourist beaches closer to downtown.

Moonlight State Beach is located just passed where Encinitas Blvd. meets the PCH (Hwy 101) and turns into B Street. The sand is often filled with locals, and the waves are perfect for shortboard surfing. While the shoreline itself is quite narrow, the main beach area sits above a sand berm, allowing ample space for volleyball courts and fire pits. The water quality has vastly improved over the past decade, earning clean water certifications from local environmental groups.

Moonlight Beach hosts a variety of special events throughout the year. In the summer, the Bro-AM charity concert is a two-day event featuring Switchfoot, a local San Diego band that got its name from its members learning to surf at Moonlight Beach. September features the Wavecrest classic car meet-up, where owners and spectators can check out classic woodies.

On the 101 in Encinitas, beachgoers can take advantage of great shopping and dining. Classic establishments like the Potato Shack Cafe are situated right with other favourite options like URBN Encinitas and The Bier Garden of Encinitas. A little ways down the PCH is Swami’s, highly regarded as one of the best açaí bowls around.

So the next time you’re up in North County, check out Moonlight Beach for great sun, surf, and fun!
