Shop Small is nationwide and used to celebrate small businesses. It was founded by American Express in 2010 and is celebrated on the Saturday after Thanksgiving every year. For the past 6 years the idea has really taken off!
In 2011 the United States Senate passed a resolution to support the yearly event. By 2012 every state in the union, including mayors, governors and even President Obama campaigned for Small Business Saturday. 2013 brought neighborhood campaigns and people rallied behind more businesses to join. With much talk about the campaign, when it came around in 2014 14.3 billion dollars was spent at these small independent businesses all in one day, and in 2015 95 million people went out to shop at small businesses!
Why should you participate? By shopping at small businesses you are helping your local economy and bringing revenue to the companies you care most about. It’s a win, win situation for every party involved!
