Throughout the summer months dolphins sightings off the California coastline are quite common, but this year some San Diegans were lucky enough to spot one special dolphin swimming with a pod just off the Dana Point headlands.

Affectionately referred to as “Patches,” this bottlenose dolphin gets his unique speckled markings from the genetic condition of  Leucism, which causes some parts of his skin to lose pigmentation. Because he stands out in the pod, Patches has been spotted in the area by naturalists and amateurs alike. While seen infrequently, sometimes only once per year, patches has been spotted off the coast of California on multiple occasions since 2006, from between San Diego and Palos Verdes. Patches is such a unique sight, many consider spotting him to be a bucket list item, and he is even rumored to bring good luck with him as he passes by.

On a marine wildlife tour with San Diego Sailing Tours you will have the opportunity to enjoy the spectacular animal life that frequents the California Coast. With dolphins among the regular visitors to the Bay, you will likely have a chance to see these amazing animals in action, and who says that the next Patches sighting can’t be by you!
