This may not be the solar eclipse everyone has had a craze for lately, but it is none the less a spectacular celestial event that happens here in San Diego. Twice a year, the sun perfectly sets in alignment with the Scripp’s Ranch Pier. And when it does, amazing photos like these are produced.

The pier is not open to the public as it runs adjacent to the UCSD Scripps Institution of Oceanography campus. However, the beaches surrounded it are. It is a popular spot for surfers, swimmers, and kayakers. If you’re looking for some peace and quiet, the south part of the beach is where you want to go.

Next time you’re in San Diego, plan to break away from the typical tourism scene and find the hidden magic that makes this city so special.
