This Sunday, we’re turning the spotlight to one of our favorite San Diego locales that sits just across the San Diego Bay. Coronado Island is one of the most famous Southern California vacation destinations, boasting dozens of top-tier hotels, restaurants, and beaches. Coronado Island also plays host to the U.S. Navy at NAS North Island, which is the home of several vessels of the U.S. Pacific Fleet.

Though not a true island, Coronado is connected to the mainland of San Diego by the Coronado Bridge, which famously stretches from downtown San Diego to the southern end of Coronado Island. Coronado is famous for its many luxurious hotels and resorts, including the Hotel Del Coronado. This hotel is iconic for its slanted red roofs and classic seaside Victorian style. It even served as the setting and backdrop for the 1959 film Some Like It Hot, starring Marilyn Monroe.

Today, Coronado Island is one of the most popular destinations for tourists in San Diego. Local pastimes include paddleboard, rollerblade, and multi-person Surrey bike rentals that can be ridden around the perimeter of the island. There are some fantastic restaurants and breweries in Coronado, including Pehoe’s and Coronado Brewing Company, as well as one of San Diego’s best ice cream shops, Mootime Creamery. Coronado Island is one of the best places to spend the summer in San Diego!
