Stand-Up Paddleboarding is one of the best ways to hit the waves this summer. It’s the perfect mix of fun, sun, and culture to spend your day at the beach in Southern California. Here are a few tips on how to get started paddling like a pro!

Comfort in the water is the first step to paddleboarding. Whether you’re going to be paddling in an enclosed bay or lake or the open ocean, familiarity with the body of water that you’re navigating is key. Be sure that you have the ability to swim in the body of water that you’re in, as well as taking all necessary precautions with flotation devices. Safety is the first step to enjoying paddleboarding!

Checking your equipment before embarking is also imperative. Make sure that your paddle is at the right length (to the tips of your fingers when holding your arm straight up) and, if your board is inflatable, that it is topped up with air. Get on your board as low as possible; most SUPers start out on their knees, navigating to a spot out from the shore a bit in order to get a feel for the surf that day. Once you feel ready to stand up, place your paddle beside you on the board, plant your hands on either side of your knees, and get your feet up under you as fast as possible, without losing stability.
