We recently got to sail with some members of Team USA who were on their way to the 2018 Rugby World Cup in San Francisco! So we thought we’d take this opportunity to go more in-depth about one of the fastest-growing and popular sports sweeping through the U.S., Rugby Sevens!

Rugby Sevens is a specific type of rugby that has gained a strong international following. There are 7 players per side, playing two 7-minute halves. Teams work to score a ‘Try’, worth 5 points, similar to a touchdown in American football. The conversion, kicked through posts at the ends of the field, is worth an additional 2 points. It is an extremely fast-paced game; with only 14 minutes of total gameplay, teams have to be smart, fast, and tough to score enough points over their opponents.

Team USA for Men’s Rugby Sevens started in 1999 and has been steadily rising as one of the country’s most popular and victorious national sports teams. They are looking for their first Rugby World Cup Sevens championship this year as the home-field favorites in San Francisco. Bracket play continues today, with the final being tomorrow, Sunday, July 22.
