Summer is right around the corner which means it is time to pull your Sperry’s out of the back of the closet and dust them off. The local surf report says that the water is just right, and you are thinking about trying your hand at sailing. You’ve always wanted to sail, but you have no idea where to start. Before even stepping on the boat you must get together kit needed whenever you go sailing. Here’s a list of 5 essential items that are needed whenever you go sailing.

#1: Rubber-soled shoes

One of the first things you will experience aboard a boat is that they can get wet and slippery. That is why you need to make sure that you always use the correct footwear when sailing. Rubber-soled shoes are recommended as they are non-slip and provide good traction when the deck is wet. It is also recommended that you avoid using black-bottom shoes because it can mark up the boat’s floor.

#2: Sunscreen

It may seem like common sense, but it is worth repeating. Always bring sunscreen when you go sailing. Spending all day under the sun means that you are in direct contact with harmful UV rays. Protect yourself and bring a bottle of sunscreen.

#3: First Aid Kit

Always remember a first aid kit. I would even recommend putting together a first aid kit that only stays on the boat. Make sure you include all the essentials such as band-aids, antibiotics, motion sickness remedies, tape and pain relievers. In addition, burn ointment and extra sunblock should also be kept in your first aid kit. Make sure to bring extra of everything in case of unexpected delays.

#4 GPS

The absolute last thing you want to have happen while you are out sailing is getting lost. Nowadays, almost all of our smartphones have GPS navigation. Just in case, it is always a good idea to keep an extra GPS on board as well as a map and compass if a technical difficulty ever were to arise.

#5 Food and water

Whenever packing food, always be considerate of others on board and the sailing conditions. Think about which foods will stay good the longest aboard the boat. Bring extra food and water no matter what, always plan for a disaster.

Lastly, remember to always be respectful of everyone else on the boat and the sea. Help out where you can, and always clean up after yourself. The ocean is here for us, but we have to treat it with respect whenever we are on the water!
