We here at San Diego Sailing Tours enjoy our little spot on Harbor Island San Diego where we launch all of our sailing tours which venture out onto San Diego Bay seven days a week year round and where our kayak and stand up paddleboard adventurers depart from to explore the many marinas and channels found on and around the island. But it got us thinking about the history of Harbor Island. Here’s a little bit of what we discovered…

It turns out that Harbor Island is not really an island at all. It’s technically a peninsula that was formed by harbor dredgings in the early 1960’s completed in 1961. Geographically it sits between downtown San Diego and Shelter Island and even though it stretches only two miles in length with a width of just several hundred feet, it’s home to two major hotels, several world class fine dining restaurants, a beautiful park on its western end, many marinas where you can find thousands of incredible sailboats and motor yachts and a few hidden gem delis, and of course us, San Diego Sailing Tours. While on the “island” you’ll enjoy fantastic panoramic views of downtown, the Coronado Bridge, North Island Naval Base and Point Loma. Come explore this wonderful part of San Diego we call home and all that it offers but then be sure to stop by and see us at 1450 Harbor Island Drive and let us take you out sailing to get you those views of Harbor Island San Diego from the water. We’ll Sail You Soon!!
