St. Valentine (Latin: Valentinius)
In Roman Catholic tradition, St. Valentine was a 3rd-century saint. There are several myths and legends surrounding St. Valentine, including the healing from blindness of his own jailer’s daughter, when Valentine was imprisoned for refusing to sacrifice to pagan gods. On the day of his execution, Valentine supposedly left the now-seeing girl a note, signed “Your Valentine”.
Another legend is that St. Valentine, who was a priest, would secretly marry couples – against the edict of emperor Claudius – so that the husbands would not be required to go to war. Valentine supposedly wore an amethyst ring, with a cupid engraved in it, and it’s also said that he cut heart shapes from parchment as gifts for soldiers and others.
