San Diego is a tourist hotspot during the summer, but not everyone has a lot of money to spend. For those of us on the more fragile side, here is a personally curated list of my top 5 favorite free things to do in San Diego this June.
#1 Twilight in the Park Summer Concerts
Date: June 19, 2018- August 30, 2018
Location: Balboa Park, San Diego, CA
All genres of music come and grace Balboa Park. From June 19- August 30, Twilight in the Park invites those in San Diego to enjoy one of San Diego’s most historical landmarks while listening to live music of all varieties. Below is a full program of the music that will be played.

#2 Ocean Beach Street Fair and Chili Cook-Off
Date- June 23, 2018
Location: Newport Avenue, San Diego, CA
Every year over 70,000 people come to Ocean Beach for the Annual Chili Cook-Off and Street Fair. This includes over 20 different chili entries, Hodad’s Burger Eating Competition, carnival rides, games, and the famous artist’s alley. Chili tastings can be purchased for $2 per entry or $20 for a Master Ticket to try all entries. There will be a trolley service running every half hour from 9:30 AM to 9 PM, the trolleys will have stops at Robb Field or on Sea World Drive.
#3 International Summer Organ Festival
Date: June 25, 2018- September 23, 2018
Location: Balboa Park, San Diego, CA
Come to Balboa Park to enjoy the 31st Annual International Summer Organ Festival located at Balboa Park. This festival stretches from June 25, 2018, to September 23, 2018. This event features world-class musicians playing a variety of classics absolutely free of cost. Below is the full schedule for the event.
June
6/25 – Opening Night of the 31st Annual International Summer Organ Festival features Raúl Prieto Ramírez, new Civic Organist of the City of San Diego.
July
7/2 – Award-winning American theatre organist Walt Strony performs an evening of patriotic music celebrating Independence Day.
7/9 – At just 24 years old, Alessandro Pittorino is increasingly becoming one of New York City’s most exciting, invigorating, and innovative young organists.
7/16- The spell-binding performances of concert organist Adam J. Brakel have led to his being compared to Liszt, Gould, Bernstein, and Paganini – suggesting that true musical prodigies continue to exist in the 21st century.
7/23 – Hailed as “A world-class virtuoso” and “an expert at defining darks, lights, shadows, and colors,” Bradley Hunter Welch is increasingly in demand as a recitalist, concerto soloist, and collaborative artist.
7/30 – An evening of Violoncello and Organ. Acclaimed organist, Chelsea Chen, and New York City Ballet Orchestra cellist, Joseph Lee bring their unique artistry to a concert of cello and organ music.
August
8/6 – An evening of violin and organ. Organist Ken Cowan and his wife, Lisa Shihoten, combine forces for an exciting program of virtuoso works for organ and violin.
8/13 – The Festival’s annual Rising Stars Night features 15-year-old, twin brothers Reilly Xu and Bruce Xu. Reilly is currently studying in The Juilliard School’s Pre-College program, and Bruce is a rising junior at the high school program of University of North Carolina School of the Arts.
8/20 – Silent Movie Night! Theatre Organist Steven Ball returns to San Diego for the Festival’s popular Silent Movie Night. He’ll play for the hilarious Safety Last (1923) starring Harold Lloyd.
8/27 – San Diego Civic Organist Raúl Prieto Ramírez and his wife Maria Teresa Sierra have been performing full-scale concert performances for piano and organ since 2007.
September
8/3 – Rocking Balboa: A Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin Tribute. The finale of the International Summer Organ Festival features San Diego Civic Organist Raúl Prieto Ramírez playing classics by Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin, two of the most influential rock bands in music history.
