Sailboats are broken down into many various types & categories; for this blog series, we’ll be focusing on the different ways that sailboats can be classified.

Besides the size & color of the vessel, the most notable distinction that sets different sailing yachts apart is a number of hulls.

Typical sailboats are known as monohulls (with mono meaning one). This type is your traditional sailboat. An advantage to monohull sailboats is that they are capable of carrying more weight, whether the extra weight is cargo or human.

Next most popular is the catamaran, which has two hulls. Finally, there are also trimarans. These two types, together, are known as “multihull” sailboats. Some benefits to multihulls are that they boast generally-higher speeds and less heeling (tilting).
